The Universal Language of John Wilkins:
Digital Dictionary

This page allows you to look up any word in Part II of the Essay, as well as the particles (pages 388-391). It will show the word in the real characters, provide a link to hear it pronounced, indicate where it is located in the text, and provide links to dictionaries.

Type or select a word in the list (suggested modern spellings are indicated with an asterisk*):

1All IPA pronunciations are in terms of Received Pronunciation, even though the Essay uses contemporary 17th century pronunciation; for more information, see this page.

2The Essay omits many words from the synopsis. If a word does not appear there, these values indicate where it should have appeared.

3Of these scans, the clearest is the National Library of the Czech Republic version. The Archive.org version can be downloaded.

4Most dictionaries should have the modern spelling of the word, but some—particularly the OED and Wiktionary—might also have the original spelling. Note that these links will not work for entries that contain multiple words. The Google definition has been included, as the autocorrect feature can be useful in identifying modern versions of the original spellings.
