The Universal Language of John Wilkins:
the Synopsis
Between pages 442 and 443, the Essay includes a fold-out table, which Wilkins calls the "Synopsis" (not to be confused with what he calls the "Tables," or the text in Part II). Most online scans of the Essay omit the Synopsis, but a scan of the published version is available here. A digital reconstruction is available as a Google Sheet (embedded below and as a separate page) and and as a PDF.
There are multiple issues with the published Synopsis: it excludes many of the higher plant and animal genres, and in many cases the words don't match the Tables. This digital version pulls text directly from the Tables, ensuring a perfect match—even though the published Synopsis sometimes seems more intuitive. In terms of formatting of the digital version, bold text indicates a double or triple opposite. Differences with the published Synopsis are indicated by colour: blue for differences in italicization (i.e., whether a word is an opposite) and beige for different words.
